Manitoba Medicine CASPer: 2027 vs 2028 Requirements

Updated By Mahad Farooq · Founder, CasperCoach

It depends on the year you plan to enter. University of Manitoba Medicine requires CASPer for the Fall 2027 MD intake. The university says CASPer is removed starting with Fall 2028 entry. Those are different admissions processes, so a saved checklist from another cycle can send you in the wrong direction.

Does Manitoba Medicine require CASPer?

For Fall 2027 entry, yes. The University of Manitoba's current MD admissions portal says CASPer is required as part of the selection process. For Fall 2028 entry and onward, no. The same portal announces that CASPer will be removed from the new admissions process.

Fall 2027 Manitoba Medicine CASPer requirements

The University of Manitoba's Fall 2027 portal describes CASPer as a 65-to-85-minute computer-based assessment and says applicants must take it only once per admission cycle. It requires the English test. The portal also says scores are valid for one admission cycle.

Your applicant pool matters. The portal describes different selection treatment for the Manitoba, Out-of-Province, and Canadian Indigenous pools. If you are eligible for more than one route, use the admissions office's instructions rather than guessing which one will control your file.

Fall 2027 deadlines: separate the three milestones

A CASPer deadline can mean three different things: when the program application is due, when you can last sit the test, and when the school must receive your result. For the Fall 2027 portal, they are not interchangeable.

How Manitoba Medicine uses CASPer for Fall 2027

For the Manitoba and Out-of-Province applicant pools, the published rule is a score greater than 1.5 standard deviations below the mean for the relevant pool to maintain eligibility. The portal also says CASPer contributes 30% of the composite used to select applicants for the Multiple Mini Interview and 10% of the composite used for final selection after interview.

That is meaningful, but it does not create a public quartile cutoff or a predictable chance of admission. A quartile is a broad result category, while the university's threshold is defined against an applicant pool. Do not translate one into the other. For a fuller explanation of what applicants can and cannot infer from a result, read how CASPer scoring works.

Canadian Indigenous applicant pool

The portal says CASPer is not used in selection of registrants from the Canadian Indigenous applicant pool. It also says an applicant who may be considered in a general Manitoba or Out-of-Province pool must write CASPer because it can be used there. This is a program-specific rule, so rely on the admissions office if your application path is not clear.

What changes for Fall 2028 entry?

The university's announced Fall 2028 changes say applicants will no longer require CASPer. The new process includes additional changes, including different residency criteria and a new selection structure, so the correct response is not simply to remove one item from an old checklist.

The portal says detailed Fall 2028 requirements will be available October 1, 2026, with additional selection-process details released after October 10. Until those pages are available, treat the removal as confirmed but the full process as still developing. If Manitoba is your only CASPer-using program for Fall 2028, you should not spend time preparing for a test the school says it will not require. If other programs still require it, their rules remain separate.

A practical CASPer plan for Fall 2027 applicants

  1. Verify the entry year and pool. Reopen the official portal before you register, especially if you are applying through an Indigenous, bilingual, Manitoba, or Out-of-Province route.
  2. Book before the final sitting. A date that is technically valid can still be a poor choice if it gives you no buffer for availability, setup, or a missed sitting.
  3. Check score delivery and your account details. Make sure your chosen program and the information in the Acuity account align with the application instructions.
  4. Practise the current format. The standard 2026–27 CASPer has four video-response scenarios and seven typed-response scenarios. Use the free CASPer practice test to get used to responding under a timer.

For a system check before test day, see the CASPer device and browser requirements. A well-prepared application still needs current program-specific verification, because this page cannot substitute for the university's live admissions instructions.
