CASPer Test Breaks and Section Order (2026–27)

The standard CASPer test offers two optional breaks: ten minutes after four video-response scenarios, then five minutes after the first four typed-response scenarios. Three typed scenarios remain after the second break. Acuity Insights lists this sequence for the 2026–27 admissions cycle.

The CASPer section order, step by step

   Start: four video-response scenarios

   Complete two recorded answers per scenario. Focus on speaking clearly and answering the specific question.

   Optional break: 10 minutes

   This separates the video-response section from the typed-response section.

3. 3

   Next: four typed-response scenarios

   Work through the first four pairs of typed questions. This is the larger of the two typed blocks.

4. 4

   Optional break: 5 minutes

   This comes after typed scenario four, or scenario eight overall.

   Finish: three typed-response scenarios

   Complete the remaining three pairs of typed questions.

Think of the timeline as a sequence rather than a promise that a particular stage will begin at an exact minute. Scenario material, instructions, and transitions also occupy time. How should you plan for optional breaks?

Optional means you do not have to use the full available break. It does not mean that the break becomes additional answer time. Follow the controls and instructions in the test interface when continuing. Do not assume that unused time can be moved into a later response window.

A useful default is to leave room in your schedule for both breaks. Decide whether to shorten one based on how you feel during the sitting, instead of booking another commitment so tightly that you have to rush. A break also should not be treated as a chance to consult outside help. Keep following the current Acuity test rules and on-screen instructions. Use those instructions to resolve questions about permitted activities, equipment, or leaving your testing position.

A practical routine for each transition

The following routine is a preparation suggestion, not an Acuity requirement. Its purpose is to help you change tasks without carrying frustration from the last response into the next one.

After the video section

Release tension in your shoulders and hands and settle your breathing. Avoid replaying every sentence you just recorded. Move your attention toward the next task: reading two prompts and sharing a single response window between them.

Choose one simple reminder, such as “answer both questions directly.” A short cue is easier to use under pressure than a memorized paragraph. The next section calls for typed reasoning, so your goal is to arrive ready to read and prioritize.

After four typed scenarios

Use the shorter pause to reset your posture and attention. If the previous response felt incomplete, acknowledge it and focus on the three remaining scenarios. Mentally rewriting an earlier answer takes attention away from the next situation.

Do not use the pause to estimate your result from how fluent you felt. A polished sentence and a thoughtful judgment are different things. Return to the next prompt with a concrete goal: understand the situation, address the question, and explain your reasoning.

The reflection period is a different stage

Acuity provides an optional 30-second reflection period after reviewing a scenario. That is a brief chance to organize your thinking, separate from the two longer breaks. It does not add another scenario or another scored question to the test.

In practice, use that moment to identify the central tension and the people affected. Avoid writing a complete answer in your head before you see exactly what is being asked. The question may require an action, a judgment about fairness, or reflection on an experience.

Practise switching modes before test day

For one short rehearsal, do a spoken scenario, take a brief reset, and then attempt a typed pair. This is a transition drill rather than a full mock. Review whether you changed your approach appropriately: speaking one answer at a time requires different pacing from handling a visible pair of typed prompts.

Australian Teacher Education uses one break

The 2026–27 Australian Teacher Education sequence is shorter: two video-response scenarios, an optional ten-minute break, then six typed-response scenarios. The official specification estimates 45–65 minutes and does not list the standard test’s second break for this category. Match your rehearsal to your actual test type.
