CASPer in French: Quebec Programs and Language Rules
For Canadian programs, you must take CASPer in the language of the program. French-language programs, including medicine at Université de Sherbrooke and Université Laval, need the French test, listed for 2026–27 as Canada Casper 2 (Français). Bilingual programs such as McGill and Université de Montréal medicine accept English or French, but only one score. Which language they receive is fixed by a choice you make when you book your first Canadian CASPer of the cycle, and you cannot change it later.
The language rule for Canadian CASPer
Acuity's language selection article says that for Canadian programs you must complete CASPer in the language of the program you are applying to. Some programs are bilingual and accept a score in either English or French, but not both. Acuity marks those programs on its Dates and Fees page.
The French test is its own test type. Acuity's test-type guide says applicants to Canadian graduate professional programs in French select Canada Casper 2 (Français), and the 2026–27 Dates and Fees page lists it as CSP-20200F. French postgraduate medical applicants through CaRMS have a separate test type, listed as EN FRANÇAIS: Études médicales postdoctorales (CSP-20201F). Test codes change between cycles, so copy the one Acuity shows for your program rather than one from an older guide. For how test types work in general, see CASPer 1 vs CASPer 2.
How the Bilingual Program Distribution Language works
When you reserve your first Canadian CASPer of an admissions cycle, Acuity requires you to choose a Bilingual Program Distribution Language, English or French. According to Acuity's language and language-change articles:
- The choice is mandatory for every Canadian CASPer applicant, even if you are not applying to any bilingual program.
- All bilingual programs can then receive only the score from a test taken in that language.
- You cannot take both tests and decide later which to send, and you cannot change the choice for the rest of the cycle.
- It does not affect programs that accept only one language.
- You choose again in each new cycle.
Acuity's score-sending article confirms you can send only one CASPer score, English or French, to a program in a cycle. If a program appears greyed out when you add it to a distribution list, your chosen language does not match it; you would need a test in the right language and test type.
Canadian medical schools by CASPer language
On Acuity's 2026–27 Dates and Fees page, these four Quebec medical schools use CASPer. We grouped them by whether they appear on the French list only or on both the English and French lists.
| School | Appears on | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Université de Sherbrooke | French only | French CASPer required. |
| Université Laval | French only | French CASPer required. |
| Université de Montréal | English and French | Bilingual: one score, in your chosen distribution language. |
| McGill University | English and French | Bilingual: one score, in your chosen distribution language. |
Sherbrooke and Laval each list two application streams with different deadlines, and Montréal lists separate CEGEP and other-applicant streams. The other Canadian medical schools using CASPer this cycle, such as McMaster, Queen's and Dalhousie, appear on the English list. See McGill Medicine CASPer requirements and our full list of schools that require CASPer. The University of Ottawa's MD program does not appear on either list; see does uOttawa Medicine require CASPer.
Other programs that use the French CASPer
| Field | Schools |
|---|---|
| Dentistry (médecine dentaire) | Laval (French list only); McGill and Université de Montréal (both lists) |
| Pharmacy (pharmacie) | Université de Montréal |
| Veterinary medicine | Université de Montréal |
| Occupational therapy (ergothérapie) | Laval, Sherbrooke, UQTR (French list only); McGill, uOttawa, Montréal (both lists) |
| Physiotherapy | Laval, Sherbrooke, UQTR (French list only); McGill, uOttawa, Montréal (both lists) |
| Speech-language pathology (orthophonie) | Laval, Montréal (French list only); McGill, uOttawa, UQTR (both lists) |
| Audiology | uOttawa, Montréal (both lists) |
| Psychology (doctorate) | Laval (French list only); Sherbrooke (both lists) |
| Other French-list programs | uOttawa education; UQTR chiropractic, midwifery and sport therapy; Laval nutrition, biomedical sciences and sexology; Sherbrooke nursing (master's) |
“Both lists” is our reading of the Dates and Fees results, where a program appears under English and French searches. Acuity marks bilingual programs on that page, so confirm the label for each program before you book.
Worked examples
These two examples come from Acuity's language article:
- Sherbrooke and McMaster medicine. Sherbrooke accepts only a French CASPer and McMaster only an English one, so you take two tests, one in each language.
- Université de Montréal and McGill dentistry. Both accept English or French, but not both, so you take CASPer once, in your chosen distribution language.
A third case to think through: if you apply to Laval medicine (French only) and McGill medicine (bilingual), choosing French as your distribution language lets one French test cover both. Choosing English would mean McGill needs your English test and Laval still needs a French one.
Should you take CASPer in French or English?
If you only apply to bilingual programs, choose the language in which you can reason and express yourself best under time pressure. You have 3.5 minutes for two typed questions and one minute per video question, so fluency matters more than vocabulary. Acuity says raters focus on content, not spelling or grammar.
If you also apply to French-only programs, choosing French may save you a second test. If you also apply to English-only programs, you will need an English test regardless. Map every program first, then choose. For language-specific advice, see CASPer for non-native English speakers and the CASPer test in Canada.
Frequently Asked Questions
