CASPer for UK Dental Hygiene and Therapy: 2027 Entry Guide
In the UK, CASPer is now an entry requirement for many dental hygiene and therapy degrees. For the 2026–27 cycle, Acuity lists twelve course entries at eleven universities, including King's College London, Queen Mary, Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield. They all use the same test type, United Kingdom Casper 1, so one sitting can be sent to every course you apply to, as long as you pick a date your courses accept.
UK dental hygiene and therapy courses that require CASPer
Acuity's Dates and Fees page for the United Kingdom lists these courses under Dental Hygiene and Therapy for 2026–27:
- King's College London: Dental Therapy & Hygiene
- Queen Mary University of London: Dental Therapy and Hygiene
- University of Essex: FdSc Dental Hygiene and BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy
- University of Huddersfield: Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy
- University of Lancashire: Dental Therapy
- University of Leeds: Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy
- University of Lincoln: Dental Hygiene and Therapy (with and without Gateway Year)
- University of Manchester: Dental Hygiene and Therapy
- University of Portsmouth: Dental Hygiene and Therapy
- University of Sheffield: Dental Therapy & Hygiene
- University of Suffolk: Dental Hygiene and Therapy
Huddersfield also appears under a separate diagnostic radiography category on the same page. Acuity listed no UK medicine or dentistry (BDS) programmes using CASPer on the day we checked, so CASPer in the UK is mainly a dental hygiene and therapy requirement for now. Always confirm on each course page, because requirements can change between cycles.
King's College London CASPer dates
King's entry requirements say all applicants for the Dental Therapy & Hygiene BSc must take the Casper situational judgement test for 2026 entry onwards. The test dates it lists for applicants are:
- 10 December 2026, 6 pm GMT
- 6 January 2027, 6 pm GMT
- 13 January 2027, 6 pm GMT
King's also notes that, for 2027 entry, students with overseas fee status can now apply to the programme. Other universities set their own accepted dates, so check each course page and the Dates and Fees page before booking. If you apply to several courses, choose a date that every course accepts.
What the CASPer test involves
CASPer is an online, open-response situational judgement test. You watch or read everyday scenarios and explain what you would do and why. Acuity's format guide describes a video-response section, with 1 minute per question, and a typed section, with 3.5 minutes for each pair of questions.
There is no dental knowledge on the test. Trained raters score each answer on its own, focusing on your reasoning and communication rather than spelling, as Acuity's scoring explanation describes. For more detail, see what the CASPer test is and written vs video responses.
Validity and country rules
- One cycle, one test type. Acuity says a CASPer score is valid for one admissions cycle and one test type. If you reapply next year, you retake it.
- UK scores stay in the UK. Acuity's country article says you are compared with applicants to programmes in the same country, rated by raters from that country, and results cannot be sent to another country's programmes.
- One sitting per type per cycle. You cannot take the same test type twice in a cycle, so pick your date carefully.
If you also apply to programmes in Ireland, Australia or Canada, you need a separate test for each country. See CASPer outside North America.
How to prepare
- Take the free official practice test in your Acuity account to learn the interface.
- Practise timed scenarios, typed and on video. Our free practice test and video practice guide help.
- Think about scenarios a dental team member might face, such as honesty with patients, teamwork and confidentiality, but expect the real test to use everyday situations. Try the confidentiality and teamwork workbooks.
- Check your typing speed, because typed answers are timed. See CASPer typing practice.
