Understanding your CASPer result

What Does a 1st Quartile CASPer Score Mean?

Updated By Mahad Farooq · Founder, CasperCoach

A 1st quartile CASPer result places you in the lowest of four relative bands—roughly the bottom quarter of the comparison group. It does not mean you answered only 25% correctly or failed the test. The useful next question is how your chosen programs use the result, rather than what a forum calls a “bad” score.

What does first quartile actually tell you?

The label describes your relative band. It does not identify a precise rank inside that band, convert into a percentage of correct answers, or tell you which one of your responses was weakest. The percentile guide compares all four bands.

Acuity's quartile explanation describes comparison with applicants on the same test type and responses to the same scenarios. Its score-disclosure explanation distinguishes the information programs receive from the applicant-facing result. Seeing a quartile does not mean you have received the confidential numerical score a program uses.

Read the band without adding information it does not contain
StatementWhat you can conclude
“My result is first quartile.”You are in the lowest relative band for that result.
“My exact percentile is 12.”The band alone does not establish this.
“I lost points because I type slowly.”The band does not diagnose that cause.
“Every school will reject me.”You need the actual program policy; the band does not determine every outcome.

Does 1st quartile mean you failed CASPer?

No. Acuity says CASPer has no pass/fail classification and first quartile is not a failure. That does not mean the result is irrelevant to admission. It means the assessment itself has not issued a universal failing grade that decides every application.

Keep those two questions separate: “Did I fail this test?” and “How competitive is my application at this program?” The first has an official answer. The second may depend on a published requirement, weighting, the rest of your application and the program's applicant pool. Do not replace missing admissions information with either reassurance or a worst-case prediction.

Can you get accepted with a first-quartile CASPer result?

The quartile alone cannot answer that for an individual applicant. Each program decides how to use the score. Check the current admissions policy for every program rather than treating another person's acceptance or rejection as a rule.

A worked example: weighting is different from a cutoff

Suppose one program publishes a minimum requirement and another publishes a percentage weighting. For the first, check whether the actual published requirement applies to your result and application category. For the second, the weighting tells you the assessment matters, but not the confidential calculation or a minimum quartile.

For a real example of the latter distinction, Brock's Consecutive Teacher Education admissions page publishes 30% CASPer and 70% academic assessment for May 2027 entry. Those percentages do not establish an applicant-facing quartile cutoff. Our Brock CASPer guide covers that specific program; do not transfer its policy to medicine or another degree.

When no cutoff is published, the honest conclusion is that you do not have a cutoff—not that the program ignores CASPer. Avoid calculating how many GPA points would “cancel out” first quartile unless the program explicitly supplies a valid method. Anecdotes also cannot establish your odds because the applicant, cycle and selection process may differ.

Why did you get 1st quartile if the test felt fine?

Feeling comfortable is different from knowing how an answer was evaluated. The result does not identify whether a particular typed answer, spoken response, missed detail or time-management problem caused the band. Acuity describes individual question ratings contributing to an overall result; you cannot reconstruct those ratings from one quartile.

For future preparation, separate the result from observable practice habits. “I must lack empathy” is an unsupported judgment about yourself. “My last practice answer said I would support someone but never explained what I would do” identifies a behavior you can revise. The difference matters because only the second statement gives you a specific next task.

A sample answer on a commercial site is not evidence that your real test answer should have received a higher quartile. Nor can an AI rating establish an official error. Use practice feedback to inspect reasoning on fresh exercises, not to claim a retrospective official score.

What should you check after receiving the result?

  1. Confirm what you are reading. Check the completed test, cycle and result in your Acuity account.
  2. Read each program's policy. Save the current official page and note any stated requirement or weighting. Avoid guessed cutoffs.
  3. Check distribution. Make sure the correct programs are selected and the result status matches the expected delivery process.
  4. Finish outstanding application work. A result cannot replace a missing document, reference or required form.
  5. Separate current decisions from future prep. Do not buy practice expecting to change an assessment you already completed.

The score-delivery guide helps with distribution questions. If your main task is planning a future application rather than interpreting the band, use the low-score recovery and reapplication plan.

Can you retake CASPer after first quartile?

The standard rule is one test per test type per admissions cycle. A disappointing result does not provide an extra attempt. A future cycle or a different required type, country or language can require another reservation. Verified technical issues follow Acuity's separate support process.

If you have another required sitting ahead, start with the official rehearsal and a fresh mixed practice set. Look for clear actions, reasons and complete answers. Those are reviewable behaviors; no practice tool can promise a move to fourth quartile or change your completed result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1st quartile the best CASPer result?+

No. First quartile is the lowest relative band and fourth is the highest. It is a comparison band, not a percentage of questions answered correctly.

Is first quartile an automatic rejection?+

CASPer does not issue a universal admissions rejection. Each program sets its own policy. Check an applicable published requirement or weighting; the band alone cannot establish your individual admission outcome.

Can I tell my exact percentile from first quartile?+

No. The quartile identifies a broad band, not your exact position inside it. Do not assign yourself a precise percentile or infer a question-level score from that label.

Will practising now change the first-quartile result I received?+

No. Practice does not alter a completed official result. It may be relevant if you have a future required sitting; a low score alone does not create a same-cycle retake option.
